ANTIQUE KOREAN PEAR WOOD KITCHEN CABINET - BANDAJI CHEST / AUTHENTICATED 1880

Description

ANTIQUE KOREAN BANDAJI KITCHEN CABINET
This is a magnificent Korean work of art.
It is made of elm root and pear wood,
with original iron ornamental hardware.
Composed
of two separate, stackable pieces
that represent “double happiness”.
This feature made this tall chest easy to move
and transport in a time of wagons and carts.
There are two shallow drawers at the top level.
The lattice work sliding doors are designed
to allow air to circulate and keep fabrics fresh.
The interior is lined with original paper with calligraphy.

The Korean script on the lattice panels read:
HEALTH & PEACE         LONGEVITY & JOY
MANY SONS                    PROSPERITY
Time has left some reminders,
but overall this cabinet is of rare beauty.
Both practical, with loads of storage space,
and eye catching as a beautiful Asian antique.
Image 12 is the official Seoul Korea Authentication Document,
which dates it from about 1880.
Image 2 is focused on the upper section which is removable.
