    Very Unusual, Large Early Antique Wooden Mortar & Pestle, c.1820-40
    DESCRIPTION:
    A very unusual, early antique pair. Large wooden mortar with MATCHED wooden pestle. A very large set. Not sure if it was intended for medical related functions or food or a general store or ??? IN ANY EVENT IT LOOKS GREAT DUE TO THE SIZE, SO WILL MAKE A PARTICULARLY GOOD DECORATIVE ANTIQUE ITEM. Has a nice country store or country look.
    Particularly early, and appears to be from the 1820-40 period based on the design, patina, etc. THIS IS ONE OF THE LARGEST, EARLIEST WOODEN MORTAR/PESTLE SETS I HAVE EVER SEEN. In good condition for something of its age. Shows use, but has nice appearance. Only real defect is a full length vertical crack on one side of the mortar (about 5/16" wide). Not a surprise to find in such a thick piece of turned wood, that is so old. Could be repaired if desired, or turned to put it in the rear, or just enjoy the added rustic appearance!!
    These are quite large, and the mortar is 7 1/2" high x 6 1/2" diameter overall. The pestle is 10 1/2" long x 3" diameter. Pestle has a convex rounded bottom, and the mortar has a matching concave rounded bottom.
